A creative activity designed around each person
At Bead Shack, we don’t believe that everyone needs to make the same thing.
Participants can create necklaces, bracelets, hanging decorations, lanyards, lace-up animals and other beaded projects, with the project selected and adapted to suit the abilities of each individual.
Our experienced staff are there throughout the workshop and can quickly adjust the activity if someone is finding it difficult. We can change the size, shape or type of beads, alter the way a project is put together, or find a completely different project that works better for that person.
Sometimes the smallest change can make all the difference.
Experience that makes a difference
Bead Shack has extensive experience working with people with a wide range of disabilities and abilities.
Over the years, we have welcomed people who are blind or have very limited vision, people with significant challenges with fine motor control, people recovering from head injuries, and people who may only have the use of one finger.
Our approach is simple:
We start with what each person can do, then build the activity around them.
For participants coming to Bead Shack for the first time, we may begin by trying a few simple activities. This allows our staff to see how they manage different beads, threading, lacing and other fine-motor activities. From there, we can adjust the project to make sure it is both achievable and enjoyable.
You may be surprised at what they can create
One of our regular customers, Elise, has been coming to Bead Shack once a week for many years.
Elise is non-verbal and has developed an amazing connection with beads and creating. Over the years she has made words using letter beads — including animals, colours and food — as well as learning to lace beads together and complete increasingly complex projects.
Her beading has become much more than a creative activity. Working with letter beads has helped reinforce recognition of everyday words, labels and signs.
Every week, Elise reminds us that when you find the right way for someone to participate, they can achieve remarkable things.
And that is one of the things we love most about these workshops.
People will often surprise themselves — and sometimes their families and support workers — with what they are able to create when the activity is adapted to suit them.
A happy, achievable experience
Our aim is not to see how difficult a project we can make.
Our aim is to help each participant create something they can be proud of.
Whether someone has excellent fine-motor control or needs significant assistance, our experienced staff will work with them to find beads and a project that feels right.
There is no “one size fits all” approach at Bead Shack.
Every person is different. Every creation is different. And every achievement is worth celebrating.
